Swartkrans, our name, pays tribute to the Swartkrans area as this was the first place where I started digging up mineral specimens.

Swartkrans Cave in the Sterkfontein (Cradle of Humankind Heritage Site) area is famous for the hominoid fossils dicovered there. It also contains the oldest know evidence of controlled fire use. Bones discovered in the same sediment in which the hominiod fossils were found, were altered due to high temperature - approximate camp fire temperature. Fossil evidence from here also shows that hominiods(Paranthropus Robustus) and homo(Homo Erectus) cohabitated in this area. Our favicon depict a hominoid fossil (Paranthropus Robustus) discovered at Swartkrans.

Apart from the Cave there were also other mining activities in the area. Limestone, Gold, Lead, Manganese, Quartz and Crocidolite Asbestos were mined intermittently. It was during the Limestone Quarrying that the fossils were discovered.
